Spar Point Research LLC

About Us

Spar Point Research LLC is a research firm founded in 2003 by Tom Greaves and Bruce Jenkins. We investigate new technologies that improve the productivity, quality and safety of work process for creating, modifying and managing engineered products and constructed assets.

Our mission:

  • To support engineering, manufacturing and construction managers in analyzing and making the business case for investing in new technologies. We have a particular interest in how new 3D metrology, dimensional control and survey technologies impact design quality, construction schedules, manufacturing costs, project safety and operations efficiency.

  • Provide rigorous quantitative analysis of the business benefits of investing in the technologies we follow. We also estimate market size and growth, solution-provider market share and other hard data.

  • Help practitioners evaluate, qualify and select solutions and providers based on technology leadership, R & D commitment, financial strength and management strength.

We provide a suite of products and services – publications, industry conferences and custom consulting – that help practitioners maximize the business impact of technology.

We serve project leaders, program managers and discipline leads from discrete and process manufacturing, nuclear and fossil power generation, civil and transportation infrastructure, and the hardware, software and service providers that support them.

Our methodology is grounded in researching and documenting practitioner cases – successes and failures – to identify industry best practices for creating business value.

We publish SparView, an e-newsletter analyzing business and technology trends in capturing and managing existing-conditions data for engineering, construction and operations.

We publish Capturing Existing Conditions with Terrestrial Laser Scanning: A Report on Opportunities, Challenges and Best Practices for Owners, Operators, Engineering/Construction Contractors and Surveyors of Built Assets and Civil Infrastructure, which is updated regularly and sold as an annual subscription.

SPAR 2008: Capturing and Managing Existing-Conditions Data for Design, Construction and Operations, March 3-5, Houston, Texas, is the fifth annual Spar Point Research conference focused on 3D laser scanning, dynamic survey/LIDAR, advanced dimensional control, and other new technologies and work processes for design, construction and asset management.

SPAR 2008J: Capturing and Managing Existing-Conditions Data for Design, Construction and Operations, April 17-18, Kawasaki, Japan, is the fourth annual Spar Point Research conference focused on 3D laser scanning, dynamic survey/LIDAR, advanced dimensional control, and other new technologies and work processes for design, construction and asset management for Japan.

We also provide custom consulting services for solution developers seeking to refine and validate product positoning and to identify, quantify and qualify new market opportunities.

Spar Point's principals have served the world's leading manufacturing and construction firms as well as the world's most successful software developers and hardware suppliers for the past twenty years. Our research has been cited by leading business and trade publications including The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The New York Times, Investor's Business Daily, Business Week, The American Surveyor, Civil Engineering Surveyor, GIM International, Hydrocarbon Procesing, Marine Log, Offshore Engineer, POB Magazine, POWER Magazine, Professional Boatbuilder, Professional Surveyor, Public Works, WoodenBoat and others.
